Data Scientist (Football)

Ellipse wish to ensure the full story behind every sporting moment can be told and anticipate data will continue to change how sports fans, coaches and athlete all talk about the game. We’re looking for a Data Scientist to join us at the cutting edge of sports analytics where you will have the opportunity to work with the very latest and best data sources in football with a remit to design, prototype and implement new approaches to analysing the game. We want you to come and help us use data to tell the stories behind sports performance that are missing today. You’ll be surrounded by experienced people from across the sports industry in a rapidly growing company.  This role is remote with some travel to London required for team meetings and is starting ASAP. 



  • You will be working alongside our analysts in other sports to develop new approaches to analysing football and deepen our understanding of the game.

  • Combine your sports knowledge and analytical expertise to analyse football player tracking data and develop new models that help solve complex problems and generate new insights.

  • You will have full autonomy on ideas and approaches to projects in order to meet the needs of our clients from broadcasters and rights holders to professional teams.

  • Play a key role in the communication and roll out of new products and content we produce.

  • Help us continually optimize our process for working with new data sets and ensure we remain at the forefront of the sport data industry.

  • You may also have the opportunity to work on other sports in the business including cricket, tennis and rugby. 



  • Knowledge of machine learning and statistical methods, e.g. linear/logistic regression, decision trees, random forest, unsupervised methods, neural networks etc.

  • Experience with the PyData stack (e.g. pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, XGBoost, matplotlib).

  • Experienced with databases both SQL and NoSQL.

  • Preferably you will have a strong interest in football and experience of working with existing tracking or event data sets either in football or other team sports. 

  • A passion for data, comfortable presenting your analysis and building visualisations of it.

  • Ability to manage different responsibilities and adapt to changing priorities in a young business.
